An unfinished crawl space tends to be quite humid, which poses a number of threats to the home. It provides an environment for mold to thrive—mold that can eventually make its way into the rest of the home. The moisture can also attract wood-boring insects that destroy the wood sub-structure. The presence of insects may also draw rodents and other pests into the crawl space.
The elimination of moisture and reduction of humidity in the crawl space is crucial to a healthy home. To combat moisture in the crawl space, a vapor barrier can be installed. Crawl space vapor barriers are constructed from polyethylene sheeting. This sheeting is installed along the surface of the crawl space floor and does double duty, preventing soil from absorbing moisture from the air and blocking the release of ground moisture into the crawl space.
However, you may find that installing a vapor barrier may not be enough. You may also need to install a French Drainage System along the perimeter of the crawl space walls and a sump pump to keep the ground beneath the liner dry.
